Where to start and how to choose

Care always follows the same order: first cleanliness, then protection, and freshening only once the item is already clean. All products sit in two sections of the catalogue: impregnation and protection products and washing, cleaning and freshening products.

    ProblemWhere to start
Boots have started taking in waterfootwear impregnation sprays, after cleaning the surface first
Jacket shoulders and hood darken in the rainclothing and textile impregnation sprays
A membrane jacket has got dirtyMountval Wash & Care 315 ml, 45 ml per cycle
Fleece or softshell feels roughMountval Polar Wash 300 ml
A merino base layer felts and pillsMountval Wool Wash 300 ml
A down jacket or sleeping bag has lost loftMountval Down Wash 300 ml
White salt marks on bootsMountval Shampoo 100 ml
One ingrained stain on nubuckMountval Gel Cleaner 100 ml
Boots or a helmet smellodour neutralisers
?What is the correct order of care?Read more

The first step is always cleaning or washing, the second is impregnation, and the third is freshening, if the problem is odour rather than dirt. On a dirty surface an impregnation spray soaks in unevenly and lasts a shorter time, so skipping the first step ruins the whole job.

?How do I choose a product by material?Read more

Leather, suede and nubuck have their own footwear products, membrane and technical textiles have others, and wool, down and fleece each have a separate detergent. The only universal products in the whole range are Mountval Waterproof 200 ml and Mountval Waterproof 400 ml: they suit both footwear and clothing.

?Is there one product for everything?Read more

In impregnation the closest thing to that are Mountval Waterproof 200 ml and Mountval Waterproof 400 ml. In washing a universal product is not possible: a membrane must not have the fabric sealed, wool needs a formula without enzymes, and down needs its natural oils preserved. Those are three different requirements.

?How do I know it is time to re-impregnate?Read more

There is one very clear sign: water no longer beads up, it soaks in and darkens the material. The surface then gets heavier, takes longer to dry and breathes worse. It is also worth impregnating at the start of the season and after several washes.

?What should I do with new footwear or a new jacket?Read more

A new item is worth protecting before the first rainy day, while the surface is still clean and undamaged. For footwear use Mountval Protector 300 ml or Mountval Waterproof 200 ml, for textiles Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml.

?Where do I check whether a product suits my item?Read more

Every product description has a table titled “Which materials does it suit, and which does it not” and a separate section on what it is not suitable for. Alongside that, always read the care label on your own item: it overrides any general recommendation.

?I am not sure which product to choose. Can I ask?Read more

Yes, write to info@mountval.eu and name the item and the problem (for example “nubuck boots are taking in water” or “a membrane jacket leaks at the shoulders”). We will tell you which product fits and which one you do not need.

    02

    Impregnation and water protection

An impregnation spray restores surface water and dirt repellency: rain beads up and runs off again, while the material keeps breathing. The whole group is in the impregnation and protection products section.

    ProductWhen it suits best
Mountval Waterproof 200 mlA universal aerosol for footwear and clothing, good for travel
Mountval Waterproof 400 mlThe same formula in a larger pack, for several pairs
Mountval Protector 300 mlEveryday hiking footwear, without an aerosol propellant
Mountval Oil Protector 300 mlOiled leather, when the care effect matters too
Mountval Textile Shield 300 mlJackets, trousers, backpacks, spot treatment
Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 mlIn the washing machine, evenly over the whole item, for membrane wear and tents
?Does an impregnation spray make an item waterproof?Read more

No. It restores surface water repellency, while water tightness is determined by the membrane, the seams and the construction of the item. Under long soaking or with leaking seams water will still get inside.

    ?What is the difference between a spray-on and a wash-in impregnation?Read more

A spray-on product (Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml, Mountval Protector 300 ml) suits treating only part of an item or footwear. The wash-in Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 ml goes into the rinse compartment of the machine and treats the whole item evenly, so it is better for large jackets and tents.

?Which products suit items with membranes?Read more

All of the ones where this is stated separately. For footwear: Mountval Protector 300 ml, Mountval Oil Protector 300 ml, Mountval Waterproof 200 ml and Mountval Waterproof 400 ml, and for cleaning Mountval Shampoo 100 ml and Mountval Gel Cleaner 100 ml. For clothing and textiles: Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml, Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 ml and the detergent Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml. The principle is the same for all of them: they work on the outer surface, they do not seal the membrane and they do not repair it, so there is no need to single out a particular membrane brand.

    ?Can I impregnate a dirty item?Read more

No. On dirt the coating forms unevenly, and some manufacturers state this separately (for example the Mountval Protector 300 ml description says not to use the spray on dirt). Clean or wash first, dry completely, and only then impregnate.

?How often should impregnation be repeated?Read more

When water stops beading up and starts darkening the surface. For footwear in heavy use that is usually once a season or more often, and the manufacturer positions Mountval Protector 300 ml as a product for regular rather than one-off care.

?Does an impregnation spray repair torn seams or a damaged membrane?Read more

No. No care product restores tears, leaking seams or a damaged membrane. That needs a repair or seam tape.

?What is the difference between Waterproof 200 ml and 400 ml?Read more

Only the volume and the price per millilitre. The formula, the purpose and the way you use them are the same: Mountval Waterproof 200 ml is handy for travel and occasional use, Mountval Waterproof 400 ml is more economical when you look after several pairs of footwear.

?How does the Waterproof aerosol differ from Protector?Read more

Mountval Protector 300 ml is applied with a pump sprayer without an aerosol propellant and is made specifically for footwear, including microfibre and membrane footwear. Waterproof is an aerosol that suits both footwear and clothing.

?Which impregnation should I choose for oiled leather?Read more

Mountval Oil Protector 300 ml, it is based on natural oils and supports the care effect typical of oiled leather. One thing to know: oil-based formulas often darken the leather, so a test on a hidden area is essential.

?Which impregnation should I choose for a jacket, backpack or tent?Read more

For spot treatment (shoulders, hood, backpack, gloves) use the spray-on Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml. For a whole item, especially a large jacket or a tent, Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 ml is more even and more economical, and it can also be applied by hand with a sponge or a cloth.

?How much Waterproofing Refresher should I use and how do I dry the item?Read more

The manufacturer states 75 ml for two items, poured into the rinse or fabric softener compartment. You can dry naturally, and if the care label allows it, the heat of a tumble dryer helps to set the water repellent effect.

    ?Can I spray indoors?Read more

Aerosols (Mountval Waterproof 200 ml, Mountval Waterproof 400 ml) may only be used in a well ventilated place or outdoors, following all the flammability and inhalation safety requirements on the label. Indoors, products without a propellant are more convenient, for example Mountval Protector 300 ml.

?Will the impregnation change the colour?Read more

Colourless formulas do not change the natural colour, according to the manufacturer. Oil and wax based products often darken leather, and that is a property of the formula, not a defect. Always test brightly coloured and light shades of suede, nubuck and leather on a hidden area first.

?Can I impregnate patent leather?Read more

No. On a closed patent finish the product does not soak in and can leave marks. This applies to all the footwear impregnation sprays in this range.

    03

    Washing: membrane, fleece, wool, down

Every technical fibre is washed differently, which is why the detergents for clothing group holds four different detergents rather than one universal one. Choose by the fibre of your item.

    FibreDetergent and dose
Membrane and technical textiles, DWR coatingMountval Wash & Care 315 ml, 45 ml per cycle
Fleece, softshell, synthetics, viscose, cottonMountval Polar Wash 300 ml, 75 ml
Merino wool, cashmere, angora, mohairMountval Wool Wash 300 ml, dose from the pack
Natural and synthetic down, sleeping bagsMountval Down Wash 300 ml, 75 ml
?Can I wash technical clothing with ordinary powder?Read more

It is not recommended. Powder and fabric softener leave residues on the fabric that attract moisture and reduce breathability, so the jacket wets out faster even though the membrane is intact. For technical textiles use Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml.

?Why is fabric softener not allowed?Read more

Fabric softener coats the fibre with a film. A membrane jacket stops breathing, fleece loses its moisture management, and down clumps. It suits none of these items, so fabric softener is not used with any product in this range.

?Does the detergent restore water repellency?Read more

Not directly. Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml removes dirt and residues of earlier detergents that reduce water repellency, but the DWR coating itself is restored by a separate impregnation product.

?Can I wash and impregnate in one cycle?Read more

Yes. Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml goes into the main wash compartment and Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 ml into the rinse compartment. That way the item is cleaned and regains its surface water repellency in a single cycle.

?How much detergent should I use?Read more

Wash & Care: 45 ml, about half a cap, for one cycle with no more than two garments, or 45 ml in 10 litres of warm water by hand. Polar Wash and Down Wash: 75 ml in the main compartment or 75 ml in 15 litres of water. For Wool Wash take the dose from the pack.

?How do I wash a down jacket or a sleeping bag?Read more

Wash with Mountval Down Wash 300 ml, 75 ml in the main wash compartment. More important than the dose is the size of the drum: the sleeping bag has to move freely. After washing, shake the item out and dry it fully, shaking it regularly so that the filling does not clump.

?Why is the down clumped after washing?Read more

That happens while the item is not yet completely dry. It needs to be dried fully and shaken during drying, and if the label allows it, the heat of a tumble dryer helps to restore the loft.

?How do I wash merino wool?Read more

With Mountval Wool Wash 300 ml: by hand or on the wool programme, at a low temperature according to the label. The product is free of the enzymes that damage wool fibre and it foams little, so it rinses out easily. Do not wring the item hard, and dry items that tend to lose their shape flat.

?At what temperature should I wash?Read more

Always according to the care label of the item. Wool and down are washed at a low temperature, and for wool items a tumble dryer, hot water and heavy spinning are not suitable unless the label clearly allows them.

    ?Can I use a tumble dryer?Read more

Only if the care label of the item allows it. For down items a tumble dryer helps to restore the loft, and after Waterproofing Refresher the heat helps to set the water repellency. For wool, flat drying is the safest.

?Does Polar Wash suit cotton and softshell?Read more

Yes. Mountval Polar Wash 300 ml is made for fleece, microfleece, softshell and stretch fabrics, as well as synthetic fibre, viscose and cotton. If the jacket has a membrane and looking after it is the main thing, Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml is a better fit.

?How should I store the washing products?Read more

For Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml the manufacturer states storage in the original pack at +5 to +30 °C. The general rule for all the products is the same: dry, in a closed original pack, away from direct heat and sunlight.

    04

    Footwear cleaning and leather care

Cleaning is the first step and the one most often skipped. You will find the products in the footwear cleaners section, and protection after cleaning in footwear impregnation sprays.

    SituationProduct
The whole boot is dirty or has salt marksMountval Shampoo 100 ml
One ingrained stain on nubuck or textileMountval Gel Cleaner 100 ml
Protection needs renewing after cleaningMountval Protector 300 ml or Mountval Oil Protector 300 ml
?What is the difference between Shampoo foam and Gel Cleaner?Read more

Mountval Shampoo 100 ml is a solvent free foam, convenient for cleaning a whole boot and several materials at once, and for salt marks. Mountval Gel Cleaner 100 ml has a built in brush, so it is better for local, ingrained stains.

?How do I remove white salt marks in winter?Read more

Mountval Shampoo 100 ml is made for that: the manufacturer states that this solvent free product removes loose dirt and salt marks and refreshes the colour. After cleaning, let the footwear dry naturally and only then renew the protection.

?Do the cleaners suit suede and nubuck?Read more

Yes, both of them do. But suede and nubuck, especially in bright colours, are sensitive, so a test on a hidden area is essential, and once dry the surface should be gently brushed up with a suitable brush.

?Can I wash boots with water?Read more

Do not soak footwear. Too much water damages glued seams and the inner lining, so clean with a damp cloth or a sponge, and let the gel layer only foam up.

?Does cleaning damage the DWR coating?Read more

The manufacturer states that it does not. We present this as the manufacturer's statement, not as the result of an independent test.

?Do I need to impregnate after cleaning?Read more

Yes, if you want the surface to repel water. Cleaning gives no protection: a clean boot without impregnation takes in water just as it did before cleaning.

?How do I care for the leather itself, not just impregnate it?Read more

Impregnation sprays protect the surface, but they do not nourish or condition the leather. For deeper nourishment, suppleness and shine the manufacturer has a separate line of creams and pastes (colourless and black wax cream, an oil paste, a beeswax paste). If you need one of these, write to info@mountval.eu and we will tell you when it will be in our catalogue.

?Do wax and oil products suit suede?Read more

No. Waxes and oils mat down a brushed surface, which is why suede and nubuck have their own separate products. For suede and nubuck footwear Mountval Protector 300 ml or Mountval Oil Protector 300 ml are suitable, if a possible darkening of the shade is acceptable to you.

?Will the product darken my boots?Read more

Colourless formulas do not change the colour, according to the manufacturer. Oil and wax based products often darken leather or change a matt finish. That is a property of the formula, not a defect, so a test on a hidden area is essential.

?Why has the applicator sponge turned yellow?Read more

The manufacturer states that yellowing of the sponge is a natural phenomenon and says nothing about the quality of the product.

    05

    Odour and freshening

Odour builds up where washing is hardest. The odour neutralisers group holds three products, and none of them is a detergent or a disinfectant.

    Where the odour isProduct
Base layers, sports underwear (washable)Mountval Silver Freshness 315 ml
Inside of boots, insoles, a tentMountval Odour Absorber 100 ml
Helmet lining, hat, glovesMountval Helmet Clean & Fresh 100 ml
?Is Silver Freshness a detergent?Read more

No. It is a freshener used during the rinse with nano silver: 45 ml goes into the rinse compartment, not next to the detergent. Dirt and stains are washed out by a separate detergent. One 315 ml pack is enough for about seven rinses.

    ?Do these products disinfect?Read more

No. The manufacturer states odour neutralisation, nano silver and silver nanoparticles, but without a separate biocidal authorisation these are not disinfectants, so this is not a biocidal product and we make no hygiene claims of that kind for it.

?How do I freshen the inside of boots?Read more

With Mountval Odour Absorber 100 ml: take out the insoles, spray them and the inside of the boots evenly, and leave them to dry. The product is made for the inside of all types of footwear, including inline skates, ice skates, ski and snowboard boots, and once dry it leaves a citrus note.

?What should I use for a helmet, a hat and gloves?Read more

Mountval Helmet Clean & Fresh 100 ml, sprayed directly onto textile linings. The manufacturer lists ski, cycling and motorcycle helmets, ski boots, ice skates, inline skates, sports, work and everyday footwear, gloves and hats.

?Can I spray it on a helmet visor?Read more

Only according to the label and only after testing on a small, invisible area. Visor coatings differ a great deal, and the anti fog effect is stated by the manufacturer, so we do not present it as a confirmed anti fog function. We do not recommend using the product on an expensive visor without a clear confirmation of compatibility.

?Why does the odour come back?Read more

Because it is caused not by dirt but by substances and moisture held in the fibre. Freshening therefore works best regularly and together with normal drying and airing, rather than as a one-off action.

    ?Can I treat a tent with a freshener?Read more

Yes, for Mountval Odour Absorber 100 ml the manufacturer lists outer tent surfaces and the outside of sports clothing. Test sensitive or decorative textiles on a hidden area first.

    Safety, composition and storage

?Is it safe to use aerosols at home?Read more

Spray only in a well ventilated place or outdoors, and follow all the flammability and inhalation safety requirements given on the label. Indoors, products without a propellant are more convenient, for example Mountval Protector 300 ml or Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml.

?When is a test on a hidden area essential?Read more

Always when the material is brightly dyed, light, suede, nubuck or has a non standard factory finish, and always before using an oil or wax based product. For textiles a test is also recommended if the fabric is sensitive or decorative.

    ?Are the products biodegradable?Read more

The manufacturer states Mountval Wool Wash 300 ml and Mountval Silver Freshness 315 ml as biodegradable. This is a property declared by the manufacturer, and we do not present it as the result of an independent test.

?Can I spray it on skin or on a garment I am wearing?Read more

No. For Mountval Odour Absorber 100 ml the manufacturer states separately that it must not be sprayed on skin, eyes or mucous membranes. All the products are used on an item that has been taken off, and it must be completely dry and aired before you wear it.

?How should the products be stored?Read more

In the original closed pack, dry, away from direct heat and sunlight. For Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml the manufacturer gives a specific range: +5 to +30 °C.
